Does council tax affect your credit score?

By Sam Kane · Last checked 9 October 2026 · Covers England and Wales

Paying your council tax does not usually affect your credit score. Councils do not normally report council tax to credit reference agencies, so paying on time does not show on your credit file, and a missed payment usually does not either. That does not make it safe to fall behind: arrears are a priority debt, and councils have strong powers to collect them.

This guide covers England and Wales. Scotland collects council tax arrears in a different way, and Northern Ireland has domestic rates in place of council tax. The credit file facts apply across the UK.

The short version

Does council tax affect your credit score if you pay on time?

Not on its own. Your credit file is the record that credit reference agencies, such as Experian, Equifax and TransUnion, keep about how you handle credit and some bills. A bill only shows there if the company you pay sends the data to an agency, and councils do not usually do this.

One exception is Experian Boost, an optional service. You connect your current account, and Experian can count council tax payments in your Experian score. Experian says not all lenders use it.

Does unpaid council tax affect your credit score?

Usually not directly, but it can cause serious problems. Here is what happens in England if you miss a payment, based on GOV.UK and Citizens Advice:

  1. Reminder. The council sends a reminder, usually about 2 weeks after the missed payment. You have 7 days to pay.
  2. The whole year becomes due. If you do not pay in time, the council can ask for the rest of the year’s council tax at once.
  3. Liability order. If you still do not pay, the council can ask the magistrates’ court for a liability order. This is a court order that lets the council collect the debt. Court costs are usually added.
  4. Collection. With a liability order, the council can take money from your wages or from benefits such as Universal Credit, or send enforcement agents (bailiffs). If you owe more than £5,000, it can apply to make you bankrupt.

In Wales the steps are similar, but Citizens Advice says you get 14 days to pay after a reminder, and a final notice comes at least 41 days after the missed payment.

When could a council debt show on your credit file?

A liability order is not a county court judgment, so it does not usually appear on your file. A council debt could still show in some cases:

Which bills affect your credit score?

Experian says a credit file can include mobile phone contracts and utilities such as gas, electricity and water.

Bill Usually on your credit file?
Credit cards, loans and overdrafts Yes
Mobile phone contracts Often
Energy (gas and electricity) Often
Council tax No
Rent No, unless it is reported
Streaming and other subscriptions No

What to do if you are behind with council tax

  1. Contact the council now. Ask to spread the payments over 12 months instead of 10.
  2. Check for a discount. You may get Council Tax Reduction on a low income, or 25% off if you live alone as an adult.
  3. Get free advice. Citizens Advice and StepChange can help you plan which debts to pay first. If you are also behind with rent, read rent arrears: what to do if you are behind.
  4. Ask about Breathing Space. It can pause action by creditors for 60 days while you get advice.

Can rent show on your credit file instead?

Yes. Like council tax, rent is a big monthly bill that usually does not show on your credit file. Unlike council tax, it can be added. Reported to Experian, Equifax and TransUnion, it becomes part of your credit history. That is how you make your biggest bill count on your credit file. See how Report My Rent works.

Common questions

Does council tax show on my credit report?

Not usually. Councils do not normally report council tax payments to credit reference agencies.

Does a council tax liability order affect my credit score?

Not usually, because it is not a county court judgment. But it lets the council take money from your wages or benefits, or send bailiffs.

Can paying council tax on time help my score?

Not usually, because councils do not report it. Experian Boost, an optional Experian service, can count council tax payments in your Experian score. Not all lenders use it.

Which bills affect your credit score?

Credit cards, loans, overdrafts, and often mobile phone and energy contracts. Council tax and rent usually do not, but rent can be added by reporting it.

Can a council take council tax from my wages?

Yes, once it has a liability order from the magistrates’ court. It can also take it from some benefits.

Is it the same in Scotland?

Not quite. In Scotland the council gets a summary warrant, adds 10% to the debt, and sheriff officers collect it. Northern Ireland has domestic rates, collected by Land & Property Services.
