Does paying rent build credit?

Does paying rent build credit? It can, once your rent is reported to a credit reference agency. On its own, rent usually does not appear on your credit file, so it does not count. Once it is reported, Experian says rent paid on time can count in your Experian score.

The short version

Does rent affect your credit score?

Only if it is on your credit file. Your credit score is a number a credit reference agency works out from your credit file, which is the record of how you handle credit and bills. If your rent is not on your file, it has no effect on your score, good or bad.

Experian puts it simply: rent that is not reported has no impact. Rent that is reported, and paid on time, can help.

Many renters are surprised by this. You may have paid rent on time for years, and none of it shows. At the same time, a phone contract or a small credit card does show. That is because those companies report to credit reference agencies, and most landlords do not.

Why rent can matter to lenders

When you apply for credit, a lender wants to know if you are likely to pay it back. Your credit file is one of the main ways it finds out.

A thin credit file is one with very little on it, which is common if you are young or have never borrowed. Read more in rent and your credit file.

Rent is a large payment you make every month. A record of it can show a lender that you keep up with a regular commitment, in a similar way to mortgage payments for a homeowner. Experian says rent reporting can help you build a credit history without borrowing.

How to get your rent to count

There are two main ways.

1. Your landlord reports it

Some landlords send rent data to Experian through a scheme called the Rental Exchange. Most of them are councils and housing associations, plus some large private landlords and letting agents. If you rent from one of them, your rent may already be on your Experian file. Ask your landlord, or check your Experian credit report. 2. You report it yourself

If your landlord does not report, you can use a rent reporting company. You connect the bank account you pay rent from, read-only, and the company reports your rent each month. Read how rent reporting works.

Which credit reference agencies count rent?

Agency Does it accept rent data? How it gets there
Experian Yes. Experian says reported rent can count in your Experian score. From landlords through the Rental Exchange, and from rent reporting companies
Equifax Yes. Reported rent shows on your Equifax credit file. From rent reporting companies

You can see your reported rent in the Experian app and on ClearScore.

Lenders may check one agency or more than one. Having your rent at all three main agencies means more lenders may see it. Report My Rent reports to Experian, Equifax and TransUnion.

How long before rent counts?

Experian says you can’t report rent payments from the past, so your record starts when reporting starts. With Report My Rent, each rent payment shows on your credit file at Experian, Equifax and TransUnion the month after you pay it.

What does a rent record show lenders?

A rent record shows a large payment made every month. Experian says paying rent on time improves your score once it is reported. Equifax says rent gives lenders a more rounded view of a renter. Report My Rent works in a simple way: we report the rent payments we see in your bank account, and nothing else.

Can rent reporting help with a mortgage?

It can give a mortgage lender more to look at. No one can promise a mortgage, though. A mortgage lender looks at many things, including your income, your deposit and your whole credit file. Some lenders may give weight to a rent record. Others may not. Read rent history and mortgages for more.

Common questions

Does paying rent build credit automatically?

No. Rent only builds credit if your landlord or a rent reporting company reports it to a credit reference agency.

Does rent count in my Experian score?

Yes, once it is reported. Experian says its 1250 score includes rent payments reported to it.

Do I need my landlord to report my rent?

No. You can use a rent reporting company that reads your own bank account. Your landlord does not need to agree.

Where can I see my rent once it is reported?

In the free Experian app for your Experian file, and on ClearScore for your Equifax file.

Does paying rent help if I have never had credit?

It may. If your credit file is thin, a rent record gives lenders more to look at, without you having to borrow.
