Rent reporting

What is rent reporting?

Rent reporting puts the rent you pay on your credit file. Each month we tell Experian, Equifax and TransUnion about the rent you paid, so lenders can see it, in the same way they see a loan or a credit card.

Which credit agencies do you report to?

All three of the UK’s main credit reference agencies: Experian, through the Experian Rental Exchange, Equifax and TransUnion. Each lender chooses which agencies it checks, so with your rent at all three, it is there whichever file they look at.

How does rent reporting help my credit?

It turns your rent, usually your biggest monthly bill, into credit history. Experian counts reported rent in your Experian credit score, and Equifax and TransUnion add it to your credit files, so lenders see every month of rent you have paid, whichever agency they check. That gives them a fuller picture of you when you apply for a mortgage, a credit card or a phone contract, and it helps confirm who you are and where you live.

Why is my rent not on my credit file already?

Most landlords and letting agents do not report rent. A loan or a credit card reaches your credit file on its own. Rent only gets there if someone reports it for you.

What information do you share with Experian, Equifax and TransUnion?

Each month we send your name, date of birth, rental address, tenancy details and the date and amount of each rent payment. Experian, Equifax and TransUnion each add it to your credit file, where lenders can see it. Our Privacy notice explains how we handle your data.

Does my landlord need to know?

No. Your landlord does not need to agree to anything or do anything, and we never contact them.

Do I need to change how I pay my rent?

No. Keep paying exactly as you do now, by standing order, bank transfer or Direct Debit. We see the payment in your bank account and report it for you.

Your bank connection

Is it safe to connect my bank?

Yes. We connect through TrueLayer, which is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority. The connection is read-only: we can see your transactions, we cannot move money, and we never see your bank login.

Which banks can I connect?

Most UK banks and building societies, through open banking. You choose your bank on TrueLayer’s screens when you sign up, and confirm in your bank’s app or website.

Why do I need to reconnect my bank every 90 days?

Open banking asks you to confirm every 90 days that we can still see your account. We email you before access runs out, and you reconnect from your account in a few taps.

What if I start paying rent from a different account?

In your account, choose Change bank on your bank and connect the account you now pay rent from. We find your rent there from then on.

Finding and reporting your rent

How do you find my rent?

We look in your connected account for regular payments that look like rent, and you pick the one that is your rent. After that, we look for it every month around the day you usually pay.

What if you cannot find my rent?

Let us know at [email protected], and we'll work it out.

Why does a month in my rent record say "Not found"?

We did not see your rent leave your account that month, so we reported nothing for it. The months we have already reported stay on your file. If your rent changed, or you paid from another account, tell us so we can find it again.

When will my rent show on my credit file?

We tell Experian, Equifax and TransUnion about your rent every month. When a month appears, and how it is shown, is up to each agency, but it usually takes just a week or two.

What if my rent amount or payment date changes?

Email us at [email protected] with the new amount or date, so we keep finding your rent each month.

How do I see what you have reported?

Your rent record in your account shows every month we have reported. You can also check your Experian, Equifax and TransUnion credit files at no cost. If anything does not match, tell us and we will put it right.

Plans and payment

How much does it cost?

£4.99 a month, or £49.99 a year, which gives you 2 months free.

When do I pay?

You pay nothing until we find your rent. Then you choose a plan and pay for your first month or year. Your plan renews automatically until you cancel.

How can I pay?

By debit or credit card, or with Apple Pay or Google Pay where your device supports them. Payments go through Stripe, so we never see or store your card details. We do not take PayPal at the moment.

Can I switch between monthly and yearly?

Yes. Open your account, choose Manage my plan and switch plan there.

How do I update my card or get a receipt?

Open your account and choose Manage my plan. You can change your card and download every receipt there.

What happens if a payment fails?

Stripe tries again over the next few days, and we let you know by email. Update your card in your account so your reporting carries on. If the payment still fails, your plan ends and we stop reporting.

Cancelling and moving home

How do I cancel?

Cancel at any time in your account, under Manage my plan, or email us at [email protected]. Cancel within 14 days of your first payment and we refund everything you paid.

Do I get a refund if I cancel later?

Your plan runs to the end of the month or year you have paid for, and we keep reporting until then. We do not refund part of a month or year. If you cancel within 14 days of a yearly renewal, we refund that payment in full.

What happens to my credit file when I cancel?

The months we have reported stay on your file. They are a true record of rent you paid, and the agencies normally keep them for six years.

What happens when I move home?

In your account, choose I have moved out on your home, then Add my new home and confirm your new rent. Your plan and your bank stay as they are. The months we have reported stay on your file, and we carry on with your new rent.
