How long does rent reporting take to show on your credit file?
By Sam Kane · Last checked 9 October 2026
Your rent starts building your record from the first month we report it. Each rent payment shows on your credit file at Experian, Equifax and TransUnion the month after you pay it. Each month adds to it.
The short version
- Your record builds month by month. Each rent payment is reported after you pay it.
- Past rent is not added. Your record starts when you join.
- Rent shows the month after you pay it, at Experian, Equifax and TransUnion.
- Your tenancy must be at least 2 months old before we can report it.
- Start sooner if you can. The earlier you start, the longer your record.
The steps, and what affects the timing
| Step | What happens | What affects how long it takes |
|---|---|---|
| 1. You sign up and connect your bank | We look for your rent in the last 3 months of transactions | We need 2 similar rent payments in the last 90 days, and a tenancy at least 2 months old |
| 2. You confirm your rent | You tell us which payment is your rent | Nothing, once we find it |
| 3. We report each month | We tell Experian, Equifax and TransUnion that you paid | Your rent is reported after each payment |
| 4. Rent shows on your file | The agencies add each month to your file | Each payment shows the month after you pay it |
| 5. Rent counts in your score | Experian includes reported rent in its 1250 score | Each month reported adds to your record |
Why it takes time
Past rent cannot be added
Experian says rent reporting companies cannot add past payments. So your record does not start with years of rent. It starts with the first month we report. Read can you backdate rent reporting.
When will I see my rent on my credit file?
Each month, we tell Experian, Equifax and TransUnion about your rent. Each rent payment shows on your credit file at Experian, Equifax and TransUnion the month after you pay it. So if you pay your first reported rent in March, it shows in April. You can also see the months we have reported on your account page. Read how to see your rent on your credit report.
When can rent count in my Experian score?
Experian says its 1250 score includes rent payments reported to it, and that paying rent on time improves your score. Equifax adds reported rent to your Equifax credit file, which lenders can see. Your score also depends on the rest of your file, and each lender decides how to use it.
What can I do while I wait?
- Keep paying rent from the same bank account. That way we can keep finding it.
- Register to vote at your address. Experian says the electoral roll helps lenders confirm your name and address.
- Check your credit reports. Look at your Experian, Equifax and TransUnion files to make sure your details are right.
