Can you backdate rent reporting?
By Sam Kane · Last checked 9 October 2026
Rent reporting starts from the month you join. Experian says you can’t report rent payments from the past, so every renter’s record builds from the day they start. That is why starting sooner helps.
The short version
- Past rent is not added. Experian says you can’t report rent payments from the past.
- Reporting starts from when you join. With Report My Rent, your record builds from then on.
- We look at past payments only to find your rent. We check the last 3 months to spot the pattern, but we do not report those months.
- Time matters. Each rent payment shows on your credit file at Experian, Equifax and TransUnion the month after you pay it.
- So start early. The sooner you start, the sooner your record builds.
Why your record starts from the month you join
A credit file is a record of what happens month by month.
Experian’s guide is clear that you can’t report rent payments from the past when you start rent reporting. Your rent record begins when reporting begins.
This can feel unfair if you have paid rent on time for years. Those years still matter in other ways. A landlord reference or your bank statements can show a lender your rent history when you apply. They just do not go onto your credit file.
Why we look at your past 3 months
When you connect your bank, Report My Rent looks at the last 3 months of transactions. This is only to find your rent. We look for:
- a regular rent payment, monthly, every 4 weeks or weekly
- a tenancy at least 2 months old
- 2 similar rent payments in the last 90 days
You then confirm which payment is your rent. Those past payments help us find your rent, but we do not report them. Reporting starts from when you join.
How long until your rent counts
Because past rent cannot be added, your record takes time to grow. With Report My Rent, each rent payment shows on your credit file at Experian, Equifax and TransUnion the month after you pay it. Your record then grows by one month at a time.

What this means if you plan to apply for credit
If you plan to apply for a mortgage, a loan or a credit card in the next year or so, start rent reporting as early as you can. Each month you wait is a month that will not be on your file.
No one can promise that a rent record will lead to a yes. Each lender decides how to use what it sees. But a longer record gives lenders more to look at. Read rent history and mortgages.
What if I move home?
Your past rent record stays on your credit file when you move. Moving is simple: cancel your old tenancy in Report My Rent and start a new one for your new home.
Common questions
When does my rent record start?
From the month you join. Past rent cannot be added to your credit file, so your record builds from then on.
Why do you look at my old transactions then?
Only to find your rent. We check the last 3 months to spot a regular monthly payment. We do not report those months.
Is there any way to show lenders my past rent?
Yes, outside your credit file. A landlord reference or your bank statements can show your rent history when you apply.
What if my tenancy is less than 2 months old?
Sign up anyway. We keep your account and email you when we can start reporting.
Does a longer record help?
It gives lenders more to look at. Each month we report adds to your record.
